For nearly five years, I have lived in a five-story building, blissfully unaware of a crucial aspect of communal living: the tenants here pay for cleaning and maintenance services. It wasn’t until I noticed a woman cleaning the elevator that it struck me—this building could be cleaner and more presentable if we all took a little responsibility.Most of my neighbors are homeowners, unlike me, a tenant in a two-room apartment. Yet, while they maintain their private spaces, the common areas—the corridors, entrances, stairs, and elevators—are often neglected. It seems that many residents only care about their own homes, leaving shared spaces in disarray.
Taking Charge in 2025
As we step into 2025, I’ve decided to take charge of this situation. I want to make cleaning our building my personal duty. My goal is to approach the building manager and propose that I take on the responsibility of maintaining our shared spaces. This isn’t just about cleanliness; it’s an opportunity for me to earn some extra income—however small it may be. Even earning £20 a week is significant for me. It’s not just about the money; it’s about taking initiative and creating a sense of community. Living in the building gives me the flexibility to clean at any time that suits me, making this endeavor not only feasible but also practical.

By starting here, I can develop valuable skills in management and service that could eventually lead to establishing my own cleaning company in Cyprus. My vision is to focus on local buildings initially and expand to offer comprehensive cleaning services for apartments from top to bottom. Once my exams are over, I plan to set aside two days each week dedicated to cleaning our building.
