Every day, I find myself asking a profound question: Is it worth the effort I put in to become the best version of myself? This inquiry has become a guiding light on my journey as a student and an asylum seeker in Cyprus, where I’ve chosen to start anew—rebuilding my life, my career, and my finances.

The Challenge of Starting Over

Embarking on this journey is not without its challenges. As I navigate the complexities of life in a new country, I often encounter discouraging comments from others who share similar circumstances. Phrases like “You’re wasting money going back to school” or “Why invest in education when you could save for your future?” echo around me. These voices can be disheartening, especially when they seem to reflect a reality that many asylum seekers face: the struggle to balance immediate survival with long-term aspirations.

While some choose to prioritize saving for their future, I have decided to invest in my education and personal growth. Yes, it comes at a cost—both financially and emotionally. I see others enjoying their time, free from the stress of assignments and exams, while I wrestle with late-night study sessions and the pressure of deadlines. Yet, I know that this investment is essential for me to find meaning and purpose in my life.

Finding Meaning Beyond Routine

I’ve realized that I thrive when I engage in activities that challenge me—drawing, writing, reading, and studying. These pursuits may be time-consuming, but they fill me with joy and keep me focused on my goals. In a world where it’s easy to succumb to boredom and routine, I’ve discovered that nurturing my passions is crucial for my well-being

Understanding myself better has become a key part of this journey. What do I stand for? What are my values? What do I truly want to achieve? These questions are vital as I navigate life among fellow asylum seekers who come from diverse backgrounds—some educated, some not; some motivated, others less so. It’s important for me to recognize that each person has their own life agenda, one that may not align with mine.

The Power of Self-Competition

One of the most liberating realizations I’ve had is that my competition lies not with others but with my past self. Each day presents an opportunity to build a version of myself that my future self will be proud of. In 2025 and beyond, I want to focus on personal growth across all dimensions: health, intellect, finances, and social connections.

To achieve this, I must remain vigilant about how I interact with those around me. While some may unintentionally discourage me or express jealousy over my ambitions, it’s crucial that I protect my dreams from negativity. My path is unique; it doesn’t require validation from others.

Focus on Your Journey

As we step into this new year, let’s commit to focusing on our individual journeys. Whether you’re an asylum seeker like me or simply someone striving for personal growth, remember that every effort you invest in yourself is worthwhile. Surround yourself with positivity and those who uplift you. Reflect on your progress regularly and celebrate your achievements—no matter how small.

Let’s embrace our dreams fiercely and work diligently toward becoming the best versions of ourselves. Together, we can inspire each other to rise above challenges and create lives filled with purpose and fulfillment.
