Yet, for those who find themselves far from home, the holiday can evoke a bittersweet longing. My first Christmas in Cyprus in 2020 was a poignant reminder of this duality, but it also set the stage for a beautiful transformation that culminated in a truly unforgettable celebration in 2024.
A New Chapter Begins
When I arrived in Cyprus, I found myself living in a shelter for 11 long months. It was a time filled with uncertainty and heartache, as I missed my family deeply. The unfamiliar surroundings felt overwhelming, and I often yearned for the comfort of home. However, looking back, I realize that this challenging experience was a hidden blessing—one that would ultimately weave the fabric of my new life here.
Fast forward to Christmas 2024, and I can confidently say that this year’s celebration was nothing short of extraordinary. For the first time since moving here, I felt a profound sense of belonging. The turning point came when my godmother, Mariam, extended her warm invitation for my daughter and me to join her family for Christmas dinner. On Christmas Day, after attending church services at 10 AM, I rushed home to change my shoes—an act that felt like preparing for a grand adventure. Arriving at Maria’s parents’ home in Paralimni was like stepping into a scene from a holiday movie. An enormous Christmas tree twinkled with lights and ornaments, filling the room with an enchanting glow. The delightful aroma of traditional dishes wafted through the air as Maria’s mother busily cooked in the kitchen while her father prepared souvlaki outside.
A Celebration Like No Other
As family members gathered around the table, laughter and joy filled every corner of the house. Children played games while adults shared stories and engaged in lively conversations about life and culture. The atmosphere was electric—a vibrant tapestry woven from love and laughter that enveloped me like a warm embrace.
Despite savoring every bite of delicious food, I couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed by the sheer joy surrounding me. Maria’s mother insisted that I take some food home—an act of kindness that touched my heart deeply.
As evening approached, we made our way to Mariam’s house, where her family awaited us with open arms. Arriving late made me feel guilty; however, their genuine warmth washed away any apprehension. I am endlessly grateful for the families who have embraced us here—Mariam’s family, Maria’s family, and so many others who have made us feel like part of their own tapestry of love and community. Their kindness has transformed our experience in Cyprus from one of isolation into one filled with connection and belonging.
