A Conversation That Sparked Reflection
Yesterday, December 31, 2024, I had an enlightening conversation with a former nursing colleague who recently moved to Canada. As he shared his journey of applying to the Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec (OIIQ) and his experiences studying and practicing nursing simultaneously, I felt a mix of admiration and introspection. It became evident that many of our colleagues from the respiratory disease center have also made the leap to Canada in search of better job prospects. This revelation sparked a thought in my heart: Am I missing out on my own opportunity in nursing?
The Challenge of Career Transition
For the past two years, I have been pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) certificate, aiming to shift my career from nursing to business. At 39 years old, the idea of starting over feels overwhelming. As a single mother and student, juggling these roles can be challenging, especially in the absence of a job that allows me to apply my academic knowledge directly and earn additional income
A Shift in Perspective
As I lay awake last night, reflecting on our conversation, I realized that nearly all my colleagues from my decade-long nursing career are now thriving in Canada—a place often viewed as offering superior living and working conditions compared to Cyprus. Initially, I felt guilty for choosing to stay in Cyprus due to my health issues. However, my colleague’s insights about the Canadian application process—where health conditions must be disclosed and managed independently—made me appreciate my current situation. Living in Cyprus allows me to take full responsibility for my health without the added pressure of navigating a foreign healthcare system.
Embracing Gratitude and Contentment
Despite not having secured employment yet, I find comfort in being able to save money and maintain a decent quality of life. This led me to ponder the deeper meaning of life itself. I came to realize that true happiness is not dictated by location but by our ability to create a fulfilling existence wherever we are. In Cyprus, I am surrounded by caring and supportive individuals, and I have begun to see that the local government is not as unfavorable as I once thought.
Creating My Own Paradise
Instead of comparing Canada and Cyprus, I’ve decided to focus on cultivating my own paradise here. If I can find success in this environment, it opens doors for future travel and exploration around the world—experiences that will enrich my life and broaden my horizons.
Conclusion: The Journey is What Matters
Ultimately, this journey has taught me that life is about embracing our circumstances and making the most out of them. By fostering gratitude and love within myself and my community, I can create a fulfilling life that reflects my aspirations and values. The path may not be conventional or easy, but it is uniquely mine—and therein lies its beauty
